Meling Biomedical · Buying Guide

Ask for evidence at the proposed setpoint for both the cabinet and the inventory you intend to store.

Use the temperature supported by the material instructions or validated laboratory protocol. To evaluate a change, gather evidence for the exact inventory and duration, then check cabinet performance and monitoring at the proposed setpoint.

Define the materials and endpoints first

Identify the sample matrix or formulation, storage duration, analytical endpoints and acceptable variation. For shared cabinets, account for every category stored in the unit. If the inventory has different approved temperature requirements, work through that difference with the responsible laboratory team before considering a change.

Evidence to evaluate a proposed setpoint
Question Evidence to request
Can the material use the proposed temperature? Approved protocol or evidence for the matrix, formulation, endpoint and storage duration
Can the cabinet meet the requirement? Model-level data at the proposed setpoint and relevant test conditions
How will the site verify it? Approved monitoring, acceptance criteria and assigned decision owner

Read stability evidence within the study design

A 2024 paired plasma pilot by Bhattacharya and Nissen compared −70°C and −80°C after three months for four coagulation measures in samples from 26 individuals. The authors found no consistent difference for the measured parameters in that study. Use it as an example of a defined matrix, duration and endpoint. A different assay, storage duration or formulation calls for its own evidence.

Check cabinet performance at the proposed setting

The Meling ULT sheets list a −40°C to −86°C operating range. The published energy and 60-second recovery figures for these models use −80°C and 25°C ambient. If procurement depends on performance at −70°C, ask for data at that setpoint and for conditions relevant to your lab. Use measured or documented energy figures for any savings estimate.

Agree on who can approve the setpoint

Put the supporting evidence, permitted excursion, monitoring configuration and change-control owner in the purchasing record. Decide how the site will check the proposed configuration and document the alarm settings and response procedure.

Common purchasing questions

Can I calculate −70°C energy use from the published −80°C figure?

Ask for relevant measured data or plan a qualified site comparison with the same inventory, ambient and operating assumptions.
