What happens if one compressor fails in the DW-HL530 or DW-HL780, and what should your lab plan for separately?

What does dual-system cooling do? The Meling DW-HL530 and DW-HL780 ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers each have two independent refrigeration systems with inverter compressors. Meling states that the remaining system can maintain the cabinet at −80°C if the other compressor fails. Both specifications also list an eight-hour battery for the temperature display and alarms. [1] [2]

What happens when one compressor fails?

Each model has two refrigeration systems serving the same cabinet. If one compressor fails while the other system has power and remains operational, the second system can continue cooling. Meling specifies −80°C for the cabinet in that scenario. For a laboratory that requires a specific sample temperature or a documented response time, ask what evidence is available for your setpoint, load and site conditions. [1] [2]

Illustration of the two operating scenarios. System labels are for illustration, and the cabinet temperature is Meling’s stated figure for a single compressor failure.

Use that figure to assess the failure scenario against your storage requirements. If your protocol requires a colder setpoint, a narrow temperature band or a validated holdover duration, confirm how the proposed freezer and your lab’s response plan would meet those requirements.

How do power outages and alarms fit into the decision?

Consider the loss of one compressor separately from the loss of power to the whole cabinet. Both models specify eight hours of battery support for the temperature display and alarms. Continued compressor operation during a site outage requires a suitable external power supply for the quoted configuration. Ask your facilities team to confirm how the proposed freezer will be supplied during an outage. [1] [2]

One compressor fails
The other independent system can continue cooling. Confirm how your team will receive a fault alarm and arrange service.
Power to the cabinet is interrupted
The battery supports the display and alarms. Confirm emergency power and who will respond if the outage continues.
A temperature or system alarm occurs
Decide who receives the alarm, who checks the cabinet and when your procedure calls for moving stored material.

Both models list a refrigeration system fault alarm and a power failure alarm. Ask which alarm outputs and notifications apply to the configuration you are quoting. For example, confirm whether an alarm that appears at the cabinet will also reach the person on call, and who takes over if that person is unavailable. Include after-hours contacts and alternate storage in your plan. [1] [2]

Which models should you shortlist?

Choose between the two uprights based on usable storage, cabinet fit and your planned inventory. Both have the independent-system design, so capacity and fit can guide the choice once you’ve decided to specify that feature. [1] [2]

530 L

Review the storage layout and cabinet dimensions on the DW-HL530 product page.

780 L

Review the larger cabinet’s storage layout and dimensions on the DW-HL780 product page.

If you need a compact cabinet, the 50 L DW-HL50 and 110 L DW-HL110V each use one compressor. Compare all four capacities, storage configurations and performance figures in the Complete Meling ULT Buying Guide. [3]

What should you confirm before ordering?

  • Storage. Provide the required setpoint, acceptable temperature range and expected number of racks or boxes.
  • Site. Confirm the available electrical supply, emergency power arrangements and delivery access.
  • Response. Describe who should receive alarms, how your team will verify them and how you will transfer material if needed.
  • Service. Ask how faults are diagnosed, how service is coordinated and which warranty terms apply to the quoted unit.

If independent systems are a procurement requirement, put that requirement in writing. Include the single-compressor failure scenario you want covered and any evidence your institution requires. Ask the supplier to identify the quoted model and the documentation that supports the claim. Keep your site’s power and alarm requirements in the same request so each can be confirmed before the order.

Review the Meling Biomedical Limited Warranty & Service Policy for the coverage and conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Can the backup battery power the compressors?

The DW-HL530 and DW-HL780 sheets specify the battery for the display and alarms. Confirm a separate facility power arrangement if your application requires continued cooling during an outage. [1] [2]

Does the −80°C figure describe the sample temperature?

It describes the freezer cabinet in the specified compressor-failure scenario. Confirm sample-level requirements with your lab’s validation and response procedures.
